Why Chinese New Year Matters to Filipinos?

This reflects the rich cultural diversity of the country and strong historical ties with the Chinese community. For many centuries, Chinese merchants and settlers have been part of Filipino society, contributing not only to the economy but also to local traditions and values. Their influence is still evident in Filipino cuisine, language, and festivities, especially in the observance of Chinese New Year.


Filipinos are always naturally attracted to the celebrations which encourage gaiety, good luck, and prosperity- values deeply embedded in Chinese New Year customs. Traditions such as the dragon and lion dances and lighting up firecrackers in hopes of abolishing bad luck; sharing tikoy or sticky rice cake have become part of Filipino festive culture. Malls, schools, and communities across the country hold events to commemorate the occasion, filling the air with excitement for everyone to feel.


Beyond cultural appreciation, the recognition of Chinese New Year as a special non-working holiday by the Philippine government signifies the importance of this tradition in Filipino society. It is a symbol of unity between the Filipino and Chinese communities, emphasizing inclusivity and mutual respect. In celebrating Chinese New Year, Filipinos not only embrace a centuries-old tradition but also strengthen the bonds that make the Philippines a true melting pot of cultures.
